Scrabble

A Fun Fact about Scrabble

In 1933, New York City architect Alfred Mosher Butts created an early version of the game we know as Scrabble.

Rules

  • For each Scrabble game, there must be at least two-players and no more than four.

  • The person who draws the earliest letter in the alphabet plays first.

  • Once the order of turns is established, each person draws six more tiles in that order.

  • The game progresses as each player lays down tiles on the board that make up words that connect to already played words, like making one big crossword puzzle.

  • Tiles can only be placed from left to right or from top to bottom. Words placed diagonally or backwards are not allowed

  • After each turn, the tile values are added up and placed on the score sheet, and the person draws the number of tiles they used for their last play, always having seven tiles until all tiles run out.

  • The person with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Clean Up Australia

Today was a new beginning for Australia, its “Clean Up Australia Day “

Like most our school was celebrating this day by cleaning around our school but this year our sustainability teacher and her environment team were eager for a change this year we all dressed up into something related to the theme  “Clean Up Australia Day “.

I think keeping our school clean is important because :

  • So it is safe for other students

  • with rubbish comes Germs and with Germs comes sickness and you don’t want sick kids

So lets all help to clean up Australia and keep our Country beautiful and clean.

I’m A Scientist . . .

Earlier on today Mrs Gridley informed us on a guest speaker. His name is John Pearce. He’s a post teacher and he taught us loads about chemicals and surprisingly sugar. I discovered what really melts an ice cube which is  actually heat and or steam and or  water. We also learnt about the physics of atoms and friction. At the beginning we each got bags with some sort of liquid or solid or air we put them in order from hardest to softest (sort of). At the end we all found out about different  Types of sugar and it was really fun and I learnt heaps we all walked away with a sugar cube and a smile it was

Jyekundo Earthquake tsemdo.thar via Compfight

This week I have been studying the topic of earthquakes.

These are some facts about earthquakes:

Earthquakes involve the powerful movement of rocks in the Earth’s crust. The rapid release of energy creates seismic waves that travel through the earth.

Scientists use the different speeds of seismic waves to locate the epicentre (the point on the surface directly above where the earthquake originated) of earthquakes.

Seismometers are used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes. You are unlikely to feel a magnitude 3 earthquake but a magnitude 6 earthquake could potentially cause large damage.

The damage caused by earthquakes also depends on their depth and fault type.

The earthquake that hit the Tohoku region of Japan on March 11, 2011, had a magnitude of 9.0 and killed over 15000 people.

I hope you learnt something new.
